Between Light and Shadow

While suffering a potentially fatal illness when a child, Beatrice experiences an ‘out-of-body’ event. After she recovers she discovers she has psychic abilities and has knowledge of the future. Wanting a normal life she uses her ability sparingly as she becomes an adult, marries and settles down in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. But at the age of thirty-four, Beatrice becomes a widow with a young daughter to raise.

In the year 1895, her life changes when she overhears a conversation about a missing boy. Her unique gift has given her ‘knowledge’ of his whereabouts and she is impelled to speak to the police. Considered a ‘crank’ by the police inspector and sent on her way, she meets Oliver Welburn who is also looking into the disappearance of the young boy. Beatrice assumes he is a private investigator, until she discovers he has a title and is a friend of the family of the missing boy.

Visiting Oliver’s stately home in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, draws Beatrice and Oliver closer, until one evening she sees the ghostly image of her daughter, Clara, in a derelict cottage on the estate. To her horror, Clara is asking for help. Knowing Clara is visiting relatives in London, Beatrice believes it must be her imagination. And then an urgent telegram arrives.

Beatrice and Oliver travel to London to search for Clara. Hoping to use her psychic skills to find her daughter, Beatrice discovers she has a further ability in a dangerous area in which she has never ventured before. A realm that could put her life at risk.
